Newton’s Walk Management Committee

Our Governors

Sandra Fletcher
Community Governor (Chair)

I have been involved in the work of The Kingsmead School for many years, and more recently Newton’s Walk. Over this time my passion for doing all we can to enhance the life chances of our young people has not diminished.

We are lucky to work with highly skilled and dedicated teams of staff in both of ours schools. They do all that they can to ensure our young people achieve their potential.

We are equally lucky to work with a team of committed highly skilled governors. Together, we aim to ensure the time your child spends, at either Kingsmead or Newton’s Walk School, prepares them for their next stage in education and enables them take a full active role in society.

Carl Edwards Community Governor
(Vice Chair)

I have been a school governor at The Kingsmead School for several years and more recently at Newton’s Walk. I am committed to helping provide young people with the learning environment which most helps them be happy and successful in their studies and career choices.  I have worked in industry and organizations dedicated to helping and educating children and young people and I am very proud of the achievements of staff and students at Kingsmead and Newton’s Walk schools.

Kat Pilling
Community Governor

I have a keen interest in the education of children and having lived in the local community, I am committed to supporting the head teacher and staff to ensure our children learn to the best of their abilities in a great environment. I have been a primary school teacher for four years now and bring my own experiences and viewpoints from my experiences and training. As a governor, I am the Chair of the Standards committee.

Dr Deborah Robinson
Community Governor
Designated governor for SEN

I am a lecturer and researcher at the University of Derby and my area of expertise is inclusive education. Prior to my current role as the Head of the Institute of Education, I have been a teacher educator, a primary teacher and a special needs co-ordinator working in London and Nottingham. I have recently been working with the Department for Education to evaluate policies related to SEN and I am strongly committed to contributing to the development of a fairer, more inclusive education system.

Earl Davidson  Community Governor
Designated governor for LAC

I have been part of the management committee at Newton’s Walk since November 2015 and we have been tasked by the local authority to support their transition over to The Kingsmead School. We effectively joined our governing board with their management committee. This was a challenging but rewarding endeavor which involved lots of work joining their policies and procedures to our robust governance systems. This successful piece of work has enabled all to move forward as one PRU with a primary and secondary model

I am committed to supporting the head teacher and the school staff to ensure we are the best we can be. The governors, the staff and the pupils all share in the journey of education where ever that leads (ups and downs) basically we never give up in our support for a pupil.

We have a clear strategic vision and school development plan which is regularly reviewed and monitored. This helps us to measure our progress and also helps to identify any improvement required. The governing body is comprised of a range of people with a wide and varied skill set which complements Newton’s Walk and helps to make the school is both OFSTED ready and well-respected educational provision in Derby City.

Jade Murden Community Governor
Designated governor for Safeguarding

I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies and SEND at the University of Derby, which has a key focus on Education and Social Justice. Before this role I worked for ten years with a range of learners from Key Stage Three up to Key Stage Five. All of the young people I worked with had either been previously excluded from school, were at risk of being excluded from school or they were socially excluded at school. During this time I designed, delivered and managed the alternative curriculum for these learners. In addition to this role I also worked as a part time Youth Worker in Charge. For this role I managed a youth club in the local community which was designed for vulnerable young people. I also specialised in detached Youth work which involved setting up street projects and working with young people on the streets of their local community if they were not ready, or chose not to access, other provision.

Jemma Tague
Staff Governor

I am the Complex Case Worker based at Newton’s Walk PRU and I have been a staff Governor for 5 years.   I welcome the opportunity being a governor offers to contribute to the strategic vision for the school. I believe the right learning environment is key to supporting children to achieve,  I am passionate about supporting parents and carers to engage in their child’s learning .By building positive relationships with them I can  as a member of staff and as a governor enable both pupils, and parent/carers  to feel they have a voice.

As a member of the Newton’s Walk staff I plan and facilitate children re-integrating back into mainstream schools. Making this re-integration work is a very important aspect of my work, and is again something I feed back to the board on.

I am committed to supporting all of our pupils, the head teacher and the governing board of the school. By working towards our vision we will make Newton’s Walk an engaging and positive experience for all children.
